Many bars are hosting extravagant Thanksgiving bashes this week. But parties at Phoenix's Homme Lounge will be somewhat more meaningful.
The club on Camelback Road is closing its doors after four years. It was primarily a gay bar. But its dance events attracted all types of people, not just the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community.
After this week's final four parties, dedicated patrons will have to say goodbye to the black and white checkered walls, cramped bathrooms and strong, cheap drinks.
“The landlord passed away about a year, year and a half ago, and…the new landlords don't want to renew the lease,” said co-owner Jeremy Johnson. “We've put a lot of work into the place over the years and it's been a wild ride. To see it ending, it's heartbreaking.”
Johnson said he doesn't know what will take Homme Lounge's place. He and co-owner Terry Walter planned to move the bar to a new location, but the space they were looking at just fell through. Now they will reevaluate in the New Year and figure out if they want to keep the same concept.
The bar has hosted many successful nights through the years such as French Kiss, One Fridays and Sadisco*. One of the most popular was Party Foul!, a sweaty, wild dance night that brought a packed house every Friday. It was filled with stylish folks that knew how to dance, and a slew of established DJs who knew how to throw a party. Packs of young people would come to bounce and romp to electro, house and synth rock that boomed from the speakers.
This announcement arrives on the heels of the end of another electro disco dance night, Shake! at the Rogue Bar, that bade farewell on Halloween. One of the masterminds behing Party Foul!, Kevin M.O.B., is figuring out what to do next. There is talk of another similar dance night popping up elsewhere.
The final Party Foul! will happen Friday night, Nov. 27. Tuesday night, Nov. 24, patrons enjoyed the last Electrostatic and on Wednesday, Nov. 25, the final Resurrection takes place.
Need to get out of the house Thanksgiving Day? Check out Wobble Gobble, where residents Benni Beatnik and Kevin M.O.B. will man the turntables.
Homme Lounge was known for, especially recently, hosting events that attracted all types of people.
“The fact that such a diverse group of people would frequent the bar, I think people really enjoyed that,” said Johnson. “All walks of life came in, and it was one space in town that people could all come together for a good time.”
