I live in Rocky Point most of the year. I just got back into the U.S. and heard about the killings in the nursing home in North Carolina. The Big Businesses ripping off the public and our government giving them more money (Major coruption), Vice President's daughter doing coke, Mesa Police having sex in their cars. County Commissioners taking bribes, Governs asking for bribes. This is happening all over the U.S. Maybe I should be very worried about being here in America and should go back to my quiet vacation home on the beach.

So ... where DO you go to see the headless bodies? Are you allowed to protect yourself in Mexico? Can you carry a gun if you have a Permit issued in the USA ?

Rocky Point is definately a safe destination to go to for Spring Break. The only thing dangerous is spring breakers themselves. Especially when Don Julio makes you forget your name. Be sure to purchase your Mexico Auto insurance before you go. Its the LAW! the article recommends AAA Arizona, but you can have more and better insurance options at www.ammexinsurance.com. Be sure you choose the extended coverage policy because you want to be sure you are covered for uninsured motorist. most mexicans do not have insurance and so this will save you by being fully covered for the few dollars more. Also more importantly, When traveling back to the US from Spring Break you need to present to Customs Officials either your Passport, Passport Card, or both your Driver's LIcense and original Birth Certificate. It is recommended you bring a copy of your documents as well for faster processing at the border to identify you in the case you lose your originals in Mexico.

It is not worth it, spend your money here in the US. As a young adult I spent several spring breaks in Rocky Point and enjoyed my stay, but I will never go again. It's not safe, it's not clean, and it's not worth it, you are rolling the dice every time you cross the border. The Mexican government is corrupt and you have no rights as an American. If you get sick, get badly hurt, are arrested, or robbed you have no protection. I enjoy the people but, until the government can guarantee some justice and protection, don't go.

We are not young; we are retired and travel to RP every year in May. We RV with many other retired folks and absolutely love it at Rocky Point. In the six years we have been going there, we have never encountered one incident that would keep us from going back. We have crime in this country and we stay away from those areas; Mexico is the same. Just be careful .

WHATUP...just curious...have you BEEN to Rocky Point recently? Have you ever been at all? I've been there 6 times in since this travel advisory has been issued, and have had NO problems. I do not stay in a gated community, and yes, I have been pulled over. My own fault. I was speeding. As long as you have the required insurance, it's no bigger deal than being pulled over in the US. You really shouldn't write about topics about which you have no first hand knowledge. so do us all a favor, crawl up in your hole. Watch some more TV. Formulate some more opiknons, and KEEP THEM TO YOURSELF.

I own a place in Rocky Point and I am there monthy. I have "never" seen anything like what has been televised on the US news. It's kinda like saying don't go to the US because there's riots there.....just because a few years ago there were riots in LA. Guys.....Rocky Point is SAFE for all ages.

The people saying it's dangerous to go to Rocky Point are complete moron's. First off, Phoenix was just annouced as the best place to get kidnapped in the country. Second in the WORLD!!! Yes, Phoenix AZ. You are safer going to Rocky Point than you are going to the capital of Arizona. Every year at the middle of February our colleges come out and say Mexico is not safe because they want to keep the tourist dollar's in the US. Can't blame them but this is propanganda. Rocky Point is a tourist town with absolutely no ties to the murders going on in Juarez, Douglas, Tiajuanna, and so on. Give me break. I spend 30-40 nights there a year and have never had a problem. Stop hating Mexico because you're ingnorant and pull your head out. 95% of rentals in Rocky Point are owned by American's trying to help afford the cost of their dream home on the beach so all the BS warnings are hurting Americans the most, not Mexico!!! That's a fact you idoiots. Think about it.

If you really want to know if it is safe to go to Rocky Point, ask someone who visits there on a regular basis or lives there permanently! On the internet, everyone is an expert, but knows absolutely nothing about the topic! Many of the posters who claim to have had problems there are not regular visitors, and probably acted like idiots. Break the laws....you will have problems. Act like an a#$hole...you will have problems. Think that you have the same rights as you do in the states, you will have problems. Act like an Ugly American" (for those of you old enough to understand)....you will have problems. Otherwise, you should be safer then you would if you were cruising in South Central Phoenix or Avondale on a Friday night! Just make sure you don't plan on coming back on a Sunday afternoon.....you will probably spend 4-5 hours waiting at the border to get thru US Customs!

As long as you don't get pulled over, break down, go out at night, and hang out in your gated community, you're fine. I'm sorry, but Mexico is on the same federal travel alert as Pakistan. Anyone going to Pakistan for spring break?

It is safe to go to RP. I was just their 2 weekends ago. For some reason the crime spree that has affected most of Mexico is not visible in Rocky Point or the surrounding area. Now does that mean their is no drug smuggling in the area, not necessarily. Basically if you go out to RP during spring break just be more alert and stick together with your group, stay in the public eye.

We are missing the question! The reality is this... Is it "Safe" to go to Mexico? If you take a (and keep with you) a reasonable amount of common sense, the magic 8 ball answer is "Chances are good". However, a more important question is SHOULD you go to Mexico? I realize we live in a global economy, but the reality is that spending money in Mexico, paying sales tax in Mexico, and feeding THAT economny is something American's should abstain from for a while. How crazy is a concept that many are going to increase balance on credit cards to go vacation while our economy is in this condition. Sure, YOU may be paying cash for the trip to Mexico, but why not re-circulate that cash in your own country? We should upright this ship before the foreign goverments (not Mexico) try to make good on all the credit they've extended us.

First, I want you all to remember that Mexico is a 3rd world country. Anyone expecting to have the same rights there as they do in the US should just stay home. You have to remember that you are a visitor to their country and nothing else. If your truck gets towed or you get in trouble with the police, you were probably breaking the law or doing something wrong. . My wife's family has lived in Peñasco for 10 years and we go to visit at 5 to 6 times a year. I have never had any trouble with police or anything else because I obeyed the laws and acted appropriately. Drunk and stupid people get in trouble here in the US just as much as they would in Mexico. Learn to act right, be aware of your surroundings, and you will have a pleasant experience.

Whatever happens in Mexico is illegal everywhere else. You could not pay me to go to RP during Spring Break..nothing but a bunch of drunken underage idiots littering up the beaches. RP may not be the most dangerous place on the planet but it sure is a hot spot for getting ripped off, and harrased by the police. Like most police departments in Mexico, totally corrupt. My friend had his truck broken into, and subsequently towed while it was legally parked outside of Manny's. Huge fiasco getting the truck back and what we had to go through at the holding lot was just ridiculous. We had to pay everyone off just to get our truck back. Not too mention the idiot who towed it screwed up the transmission, and it was a new truck. Do you think we actually have any recourse when this stuff happens?

Finally, someone who basically gets it! I'm tired of the media labeling all of Mexico as being horribly unsafe and unfit for travel, because it isn't. Violence in certain border (and even interior) cities is getting out of hand, but the reality is that most Mexican cities are still safe. Just a tip for future reference also - most merchants will give your dollar the buying power of 10 pesos (they'll divide their price by 10), so it's always advantageous for the tourist to pay in pesos, especially with the exchange rate as favorable as it is!

I just returned from a work trip to Peñasco and in fact work 50% of my time in Tijuana. While I feel safe in both, Peñasco is a small little beach community far away from any violence. And as for Tijuana, just like you don't want to go to South Central LA, many parts of our nation's capital, 24th St and Van Buren, or any of the other "bad parts of town" around the country, there are areas you would want to stay away from there as well. BEhappy, I am glad you mentioned New Orleans as it is listed as one of the most dangerous cities IN THE WORLD, in our own country, yet there are not newspaper articles trying to scare you away. Go to Mexico, and be just as aware of your surroundings as you would in any other place, and you will be fine. And as for nwbrian, you are just ignorant. I live 4 miles from the border in San Diego, and have yet to see any mass killings or viloence spewing over the border...I will let you know if that ever happens.

It's funny that an article on the same subject that was posted yesterday, and had a lot of comments, all of a sudden disappeared!!! And now this new one is posted. To those who are concerned for their safety in Rocky Point, just go visit Avondale or South Phoenix....you'll know what it is not to feel safe. Please keep your college age brats or the "wannabee" high schoolers home in AZ, or send them to Havasu. All they'll do down in Rocky Point is get drunk, puke their guts out, and probably get mugged or worse by those dangerous Mexicans. That way, when I go down with my family for spring break, I'll have a fun, relaxing vacation without all of those a#$holes.

In case some of you have not been up to date on the problems plaguing us from our southern neighbors: The problem is spilling into the US and has been slowly, but with greater frequency, moving into our neighborhoods. This is because access to America is so easy, and I am not talking about the immigrant looking for work to support his family from Mexico. I am speaking of the criminal element that need to be dealt with. Unfortunatly, this means all that are here illegally to deal with the problem. There are mass killings coming to a quiet neighborhood near you, and if these people are not deported, and our borders sealed off from these people, we are going into something that will make the recession seem like a relief. If you disagree after all of the evidence, you are in denial.
