Old Town Scottsdale's SIX Lounge will reopen in September or October in its original location, according to new owner Steve McDonald.
The Valley's first chichi ultralounge closed in April when the landlord locked out then-owner Randy Smith for a failure to pay rent on the space at 7316 E. Stetson Drive, according to a notice posted on the door that month.
McDonald was one of the original owners of the club when it opened in 2001 and said he wants to bring the space back to its former glory, when magazines such as InStyle and Elle mentioned it as a sleek, modern hotspot for vacationing celebs. The club generated buzz with its model-looking waitresses and clear glass bathroom doors that automatically "fogged" when locked.
"SIX always had a great space and was known for great design," McDonald said. "We're giving it a fresh look, aimed at getting that same reaction we had when SIX first opened."
McDonald hasn't decided which design firm he'll work with to update Scottsdale designer Jeff Low's minimalist black and gray interior, but he said the club will have new décor, new lighting and a new sound system. It will also have a new, recession-friendly price point, because the days of double-digit martinis are over, he said.
But its target audience of aspirational 20- and 30-somethings will remain the same.
"It's a great location and a great room; it's something that can be re-energized," McDonald said.
There's no word on the new name, although McDonald says he's been entertaining suggestions ranging from "Twelve," to "SIX Squared."
