Posh pool party at Hotel Valley Ho
It's been a long, hot summer of sun-baked shenanigans. So something slightly more restrained, more lighthearted, seems in order. One can only take so many women teetering around a pool in Lucite heels, so many men flexing their calves to compare new tattoos.
Head to the Hotel Valley Ho, where DJ Mr. P-body will spin classic summer tunes and Top 40 hits at session Saturday afternoons. Show up after 1 p.m., but not later than 3 p.m., when finding a lounge chair will be as hard as finding a natural blonde among those soaking up the UVs.
At this posh pool party, the crowd of 20- to 40-somethings is bronzed and toned, of course, but the MTV Beach House-vibe is nowhere to be found. Rather, the hotel and the DJ cultivate the vibe of a perfect neighborhood hangout.
Birthdays are celebrated as all the sunbathers serenade the men and women celebrating that day. Strangers strike up conversations easily as the lounge chairs are so close, and sun block is so easy to share. And recommendations about whether to get the pitcher of raspberry lemonade or the mojito are shouted from cabana to cabana.
Then, after singing along to Will Smith's “Summertime,” Guns N Roses' “Welcome to the Jungle” and Stevie Wonder's “Superstition,” retire to the happy hour at the adjacent Trader Vic's, which runs from 4 to 6 p.m. every day. You can enjoy Chinese spare ribs, a 6-ounce Maui burger and fries, crispy halibut taco and other samplings from the Polynesian restaurant's menu for only $1 to $3.
