Macayo's

I have been going to Woody's restraunts since 1948. The margaritas are great. The green corn tamales terrific. Abondigas soup best in the Valley. I was there at least once a week for 20 years. Republic food critics like food from Mexico City rather than Sonoran and that is ok for them, but for aficinados of the enchilada, tacos, tostados and burros this is the top of the line.
Report This ReviewMacayo's is an Arizona-based chain that's been around for over 50 years. They now have 18 restaurants spanning the Southwest, but the Central Avenue location in Phoenix is, I believe, the first Macayo's - and it's still here today. The complimentary chips and salsa are distinctly Macayo's: thin, crispy chips with cilantro-heavy salsa that's full of vegetables and spices. It cannot be replicated anywhere else. I am a huge fan of the Baja burro. I get it with shrimp (not a menu option but you can ask your server). The Baja sauce is this amazing jalapeno-cream cheese concoction that will make you fall to your knees in taste bud delight. Macayo's is a great place to take your out-of-town guests for a real Arizona experience.
