Cocktailing conducive to conversation

Four great spots where you don't have to shout

You rarely saw the ladies on Sex and the City shouting at each other when they were out for a cocktail. And even though the show went off the air years ago, we all still imagine our girls' nights out as something akin to what we saw on that show. (Maybe that's because we all still watch it on rerun and DVD.)

You just want to go somewhere you can look chic and have a chat like a civilized woman. Or an uncivilized woman, if you're more like Samantha.

These are our favorite Valley bars where the music's the right volume, the crowd is the right mix and the cocktails are conducive to conversation.

Kazimierz World Wine Bar

Kazimierz World Wine Bar

7137 E. Stetson Drive - Scottsdale
480-946-3004

Dark-stone walls and a low ceiling, cushy sofas and low lighting make Kazimierz the ideal place to escape the hustle of Scottsdale. Kazimierz offers plenty of dim, secluded areas where you can gather with your girls and get down to the gossip without feeling like you're on display. The bar, which you enter through the back door, like all good speakeasies, hosts 2,900 bottles of wine, but don't be intimidated. The servers are there to guide, not just pour.

Casey Moore's

Casey Moore's

850 S. Ash Ave. - Tempe
480-968-9935

The eclectic crowd and laid-back atmosphere make everyone feel at home at this historic converted home in a quiet Tempe neighborhood. But we love it as a girls' night out because: A. the place is filled with lead-singer types, emo boys and ASU grad-student guys; and B. the only noise on the patio is other people talking and the occasional train whistle. The patio is lighted with twinkle lights year round and has a kickback atmosphere that encourages strangers to become buddies. The mix of tattooed artists, hipsters and granola types give Casey's much of its charm, even inspiring a shout out in the Jimmy Eat World song 'If You Don't, Don't.'

Jade Bar in Sanctuary Resort

Jade Bar in Sanctuary Resort

5700 E. McDonald Drive - Paradise Valley
480-948-2100

One of Valley's most elegant resort and spas is home to a swanky bar with spectacular views of Paradise Valley and Camelback Mountain. At night, million-dollar homes stud the Valley and the peaks glitter in the darkness, and the sounds and glare of Phoenix and Scottsdale are blocked by the mountain. The minimalist, modern bar is walled with windows and surrounded by a secluded wraparound patio with a fire bowl that begs you to take your enormous martini outside to gaze into the distance.
