Neighborhood Guide: Downtown Mesa
Mesa is a huge, sprawling city, but sleepy Main Street is 100 percent small town. Still, Mesa Ampitheatre and the new Arts Center draw big-name talent, and the statue-lined streets hide restaurant gems like Queen's Pizzeria. After spring training games, Cubs fans head to Diamond's to drink away their perennial woes. Once owned by Harry Caray, the sports bar entertains locals year round.
Neighborhood Guide: Downtown Chandler
Chandler is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation, and its downtown area is rich with culture. Downtown Chandler is full of shops, galleries and restaurants, as well as the Dr. A.J. Chandler Park, home to the Chandler Jazz Festival. Check out the First National Bank Building/Bistro at Kokopelli Winery, one of many spots downtown on the National Register of Historic Places.
Neighborhood Guide: Central Tempe
You'll find loads of young people in Central Tempe, which is home to Arizona State University students, hipsters and trendsetters. It contains Mill Avenue, a street famed for being a great spot to go shopping, get your nosh on or see street performers. And with the recently opened outdoor shopping center Tempe Marketplace, this town always has something going on.
Neighborhood Guide: Old Town Scottsdale
Old Town Scottsdale has been called the “new Los Angeles” for its abundance of pretty people, shiny cars and hip nightlife and dining scene. It’s also home to the free Thursday art walk. Make sure you have your digital camera with you at all times—you never know when you’ll run into Britney Spears at Jackrabbit Lounge or an Arizona Diamondback at Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall.
