Genre: Surf rock.
Better described as: A catchy Valley standout that will have you dancing in seconds and wishing you were on the beach.
Behind the name: The band took its name from “Surfside 6,” a 1960s television detective series set on a houseboat. “We just thought that'd be kind of a cool name for a band, too,” Rhodes says. “It has the advantage of people knowing exactly what kind of music you play.”
If you have two minutes to check out the band's MySpace page, listen to this: All five of the songs on the band's page are short, upbeat, fun ditties reminiscent of '60s surf rock.
Currently working on: The band is booked through September, including stints at Rogue West and Desert Botanical Garden. The band members are also constantly writing and promoting their current album, “Ballad of the Tiki.”
Music is…: “I spend so much time playing music and writing music and practicing, it's more than a hobby for me,” Rhodes says. “It'd be like asking a diehard fisherman, ‘What does fishing mean to you?' or asking an artist, ‘What does painting mean?' I don't know anymore. It's just a part of my life. It's what I do. It's the way I express myself. I assume everyone has the need for artistic or personal expression, and that's just the way I do it, through guitar.”
