Backstory: Singer Cisco Adler is the son of record producer Lou Adler, frontman of VH1-followed pop-rockers Whitestarr and beau of Hollywood’s B-list: Mischa Barton, Lauren Conrad, Paris Hilton and Kimberly Stewart have all been linked. Aaron "Shwayze" Smith grew up a couple of miles away from Adler in Malibu, Calif., but in a different universe—the 22-year-old rapper was raised in a trailer park overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The unlikely duo teamed up at a local club, combining Adler’s sleepy SoCal pipes with Smith’s straightforward rhymes about living the party life, name-checking several booze brands along the way.
Why you should care: You’ve maybe seen Shwayze and Adler all over MTV as the stars of “Entourage”-like reality show “Buzzin.’” But the question is: can they actually pull off an entire album, what with all the boozing and “becoming rock stars” business getting in the way?
Verdict: “Lazy Days” combines Adler’s beach balladry (very Sugar Ray, or Sublime’s lighter fare) with Smith’s classic summer story: what to do on a boring afternoon, for free. The rhymes are playful and accessible, like how Travis McCoy effortlessly fronts Gym Class Heroes, with larger-than-life lines including: “Like the Beatles, when they were bigger than Jesus, I’m a genius, Bill Clinton with my speeches.” Adler sings the super-catchy hooks on tracks like “Corona and Lime,” a nugget primed for a Girl Talk mixtape, circa 2013.
X-Factor: Adler’s father produced hits by Sam Cooke, the Mamas and the Papas, Spirit and Jan & Dean, as well as directing the classic Cheech & Chong stoner comedy, “Up in Smoke.”
