Lana del Rey, ‘Born to Die’
Due out: Jan. 31
Is Lana del Rey a noir pop star-in-waiting, a la Fiona Apple, or the result of record company market research? Judging by her 2011 single “Video Game” and the title track from her forthcoming LP, it sounds like del Rey might actually be the former. In September, Polydor boss Ferdy Unger-Hamilton denied del Rey was a manufactured act. “She likes to control every aspect of her career,” Unger-Hamilton told Q Magazine. “Often we come across someone who is really good at writing songs or singing them, but Lana is that rare thing—someone who can do it all.” If that’s true, it will be interesting to see how del Rey reinterprets the influences she claims, which range from Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box” to Thomas Newman’s “American Beauty” score.
