Unless you’ve been living in… a place with no media, you’ve discovered along with the rest of the world that Bob Saget’s perfect TV dad/amiable video host personality was just an act. The guy is famous for his complete and utter filthiness, on stage and in documentaries like “The Aristocrats.”
"Surviving Suburbia" is undoubtedly meant to introduce 'Dirty Bob' to Americans at large. But it’s still just a regular sitcom: dense dad, nagging wife, two kids with attitude and wacky neighbors. Throwing in the occasional bit of blue humor isn’t going to make the show edgy.
Some half-hour, primetime shows are irreverent and funny through virtue of smart writing (see "Scrubs," early "That ‘70s Show"); having Bob Saget say what he “really thinks” about women, money, sex, etc. does not stand up to the competition.
The buzz: Bob Saget’s on set!
The verdict: Unfortunately, the goofy guy’s presence is not enough to elevate the show to anything memorable. Pure schlock, but he does sometimes say "hell" in front of little kids.
Did you know? The show was meant to premiere in the fall on the CW, but it got kicked around for six months before ABC picked it up. Always a good sign.
"Surviving Suburbia" premieres Monday, April 6, at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
